SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

Bear Carpenter is an acrylic artist based full time in Edmonds, Washington. Raised in Oceanside, CA, the 1970s SoCal surf scene informed Bear’s early watercolor work of coastal surroundings. Turning to acrylics in 2015, his work reflected an appreciation of streetscapes, historic buildings and ocean waves. Surfing days long gone, the Pacific Northwest provides new creativity. His style is mostly self-taught, and his acrylics today have been influenced by those many years as a watercolorist. Bear was mentored by San Diego watercolorist Dan Camp, honing techniques in studio and plein air painting of San Diego beach towns, local landmarks and California missions. At that time, some of his watercolors depicting coastal scenes and missions were accepted into the Ruth Mayer Gallery in Laguna Beach, California.

Bear finds inspiration around his hometown on Puget Sound, yet a surf vibe still shows up in the artist’s work. You will often see a van make an appearance in many of Bear’s paintings. It is a personal homage to the old surfer and to the first vehicle he owned—a 1968 white VW van.

Christopher Framing & Fine Art // Judith Perry

537 Main St, open Tuesday - Friday 12-5pm, Saturday 10am-4pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

Judith's advanced studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago focused on the figure. She still finds it fascinating and draws and paints the figure for shows. But to her they are the ultimate landscape. Judy's mediums vary. "Watercolors were natural while living in Hawaii due to the colors and light. Landscapes in oil are a comfortable fit. But drawing with graphite, charcoal, colored pencil, pastel and vine charcoal are like an extension of my arm." The passion comes from the first drop of color on the surface. The drawing and composition are the warm up for that to happen. The world is full of beauty and shapes and social circumstances—seeing is the most important skill for Judith as an artist.

Coldwell Banker Bain // Nancy Duncan, Margaret Tollefson & Tina Goodrich

108 5th Ave S, open daily 10am-4pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

Nancy: Since retiring from the publishing industry as a designer and book producer, I've been able to experiment with my own work. This grouping of images is a broad spectrum of subject matters and represent my curiosity for the intimacy of design, shape and form. I use Photoshop extensively to enhance the essence of what I see– with the hope of inspiring others to see beyond the obvious.

Margaret: I paint moments that make my heart skip a beat. From the simplest shell or flower to an unforgettable sunset, I find inspiration in shadows and light. In each painting I hope to transport you to that moment. Watercolor allows me to refine details while still letting the paint flow and mingle on the paper. The colors of the Pacific Northwest are soft and subdues but there are bright pops of color everywhere.

Tina: Being an artist is my most enormous blessing. I can't imagine my life without it; it is the way I view the world. Art is my dance with the miracle of life. Intuition, paradox, integrity and balance mixed with dream images, ancient symbols and letterforms are some of the interests I bring to my artwork. My curiosity drives my exploration in an attempt to push against boundaries, find the impasse in an attempt to break through to new meaning and understanding.

Cole Gallery // Jenna von Benedikt & Ron Stocke

107 5th Ave S, open Monday - Saturday, 10am-6pm, Sunday 11am-5pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

This month Cole Gallery features two shows: "From Sea to Shore" featuring Ron Stocke, and "Joyful Souls" featuring Jenna von Benedikt.

In Ron Stocke's new show he combines some of his favorite plein air locations, holiday memories and painting subjects. From the strong warm light of the Cinque Terra to the graphic designs of the king tide we experience here in Edmonds, he captures these beautiful locations in his unique, fresh painterly style. "Watercolor has been the longest pursuit of my life. It has been both challenging and rewarding but always new".

Jenna's new show captures the whimsy, joy and the spirit of nature. From her beloved hummingbirds to animals of the wild, her unique approach juxtaposes abstraction with realism, as she creates fresh, contemporary paintings crossing from traditional to contemporary in each of her oil paintings. Jenna's inspiration for this show entails her desire for people to "find the connection back to nature" in this collection which is a joy to behold.

As an art extrovert, Carol paints both to connect with people and to push her work beyond the “obvious” and into a story that she wants to tell. Carol is passionate about recording the humor, the absurd, and the eccentric that surrounds us. Carol has a disciplined studio practice and works in series, whether subject or palette driven. This gives her the chance to reflect on themes from several perspectives. Her work is a process where she finds a subject, studies it, maybe adds in humor or emotion and then goes to the easel.

SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS ONLY

Seattle-based painter, Scott Chreist, has been honing his skills in abstract acrylic for the past several years. Originally a behavioral scientist, Chreist blended his observational skills with his passion for expression, bringing about a perfect pairing of his two passions. Chreist’s evolution into abstract acrylic allowed him to introduce another element to this union and extend the range of his talent even further. His use of wine, music, and memory fragmentation allows Chreist to challenge the boundaries of acrylic painting – using a wine wash, pigment, and clay to tell stories that explore the depths of memory and composition.

Gallery North // Anne Prather

SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

Artist, author, scientist and musician Anne Prather, whose book “Mystic Intersections” explores her early artistic journey, is delighted to share its continuation in her solo show: Flight of Fancy. A battle with breast cancer in 2015 left Prather without the cancer but with new challenges in her artistic career. “As my eyesight has changed, I‘ve learned to use the numbers in a color picker to mix and match my colors and gradients, much like a painter uses a palette,” Prather says. A long-time textile fan, Prather used her new-found inner vision to transfer her images onto shimmering silk scarves. “It’s a complete blast to imagine, unhindered by looking at them, these images draped, tied and otherwise reshaped by the cloth.” Her current show Flight of Fancy explores specific aspects of her emergence as a sighted person and post-cancer return to near-blindness. “In my head I still have 20/20 vision,” Prather says. Flight of Fancy reflects this vision.

Gallery North would like to invite you to the artist’s reception for Flight of Fancy on Saturday, July 8 from 1-4PM. You can also meet Anne and other gallery members during the third Thursday Art Walk.

111 Main St, suite 111, open Monday - Friday 8:30am-5:30pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

As long as Katrin can remember, she enjoyed painting. Despite being fascinated by the French Impressionists as a teenager, Katrin stayed more on the abstract side for her own creations. Katrin’s high school art challenges reflected the work of graphic design artist Victor Vasarely, which led to a quick excursion into studying graphic design and a period of exploring watercolor. When she started travelling extensively, she felt the need to capture the uniqueness of the destinations by photography. During Katrin’s travels, she also got in contact with silk painting which became her favorite medium for a decade. After moving to the PNW, Katrin joined her new friends and acquaintances in acrylic painting and has loved it since then.

Ann’s interest in photography began in the late 1980s as a way to chronicle her travels. More recently, she has developed a passion for night photography and delights in capturing the Milky Way as well as the Aurora Borealis. This has turned into a quest to capture the perfect picture. Ann admits she has a long way to go, but then the goal is the journey not the destination.

Vie & Vin // Kim Parsley

172 Sunset Ave, open Tuesday - Thursday 11am-6pm, Friday & Saturday 11am-7pm (21+ only)
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JULY 20TH 5-8PM

Where Art Meets Science: A Collection of Vintage Travel Bars and Original Encaustic Artwork.

The Artist & Curator, Kim Parsley, has combined her passions for finding a new life for old things, elevating great design, and renewing the enjoyment of creating cocktails (spirit-free or spirit forward) into her vintage travel bars; affectionately named The Happy Travelers. Each Happy Traveler is designed around a wine experience or a specific cocktail and includes all the bottles, bar tools, and glassware needed for the creation and enjoyment of that cocktail. Because most items are vintage or second-hand, each travel bar is one-of-a-kind, creating a renewed purpose to items that would otherwise sit on a shelf or in a landfill.

Kim also brings together art and science in creating her original encaustic artwork, in which she uses liquid beeswax to express the unique juxtaposition of places or textures and objects that are otherwise not connected to each other.

At this showing, Kim will have a collection of her vintage travel bars for sale or to inspire, as well as a selection of her encaustic paintings. Stop by during the art walk to speak to Kim about curating a custom travel bar set-up that has a personal connection to you or a gift recipient.

She enjoys mark making with a variety of tools such as stencils, twigs, squeegees, wedges, trowels, painter's tape, her hands and of course, brushes of many kinds.
