Originally from Shanghai, China, Yuming Zhu began to study under the painting masters at an early age. Inspired by the artistic movements of Eastern and Western, Yuming blends the two by Capturing the light and darkness of the European masters while combining textured brush strokes found in Sumi watercolors. Yumming prefers to leave white spaces as the background for his paintings and emphasize Spiritual Charming which is similar to writing poetry. Yuming describes his style as “Trans-ism”. It is an emotive transformation of lyrical impression and idealistic expression.
Yumming has held several exhibitions in the United States, teaches at Bellevue College, and is an active member of several artist associations in the Puget Sound area. Invited to have his artwork for “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” by Seattle Art Museum.

SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JANUARY 16TH 5-8PM

Nicki Lang is a creative dabbler.  After making leather goods for ten years, she picked up a palette knife and started painting Pacific Northwest landscapes.  After a few years of playing with oils, she started a new technique with acrylics and squeegees, creating a new body of work called “Color Poems.” When she is not painting, Nicki can be found writing, playing the banjo, or spending time outside with her husband, two boys and goofy dog, Lupinella.  Nicki lives in a co-housing community in Bellingham, Washington. Meet the artist and watch a demonstration of her oil painting technique during the Third Thursday Art Walk!

Coldwell Banker Bain // Garratt Richardson & John Murray

108 5th Ave S, open daily 10am-4pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JANUARY 16TH 5-8PM

Garratt Richardson was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada but has lived in Seattle since 1973. He volunteered to practice general medicine at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Blantyre, Malawi in 2009 and 2011. Malawi is one of the poorest nations in sub-Saharan Africa. When he brought out his camera near groups of kids, they would become highly animated and start performing as if he was taking a movie of them. This was both surprising and charming. He has so enjoyed reminiscing when looking at these kids in their countryside (and sometimes cityside) settings that he wanted to share them. There is a delightful insouciance in seeing children living their seemingly unencumbered lives in the setting of a developing country. When the location is especially remote, there’s a good chance they have never been photographed.

While growing up in the area, John Murray’s family would come to Edmonds to dig for butter clams. On occasions they were treated to a ferry ride to Kingston and back. Great memories! John’s career was as ski wear designer. Color was an important design element. Since he collected Native American art and artifacts, he combined his love of color and his interest in their culture into his artwork.

MaJe Gallery // Manya Vee

409 Main St, open Tuesday - Thursday noon-4pm, Friday - Saturday 11am-5pm
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JANUARY 16TH 5-8PM

MaJe Gallery owner has been fascinated with jewelry since she was knee high to a grasshopper. She could be found traipsing around the house wearing her mother's silver wedding sandals (that were way too big) with every piece of jewelry on her arms, fingers and ears (thankfully, her mother never pierced her ears) that would fit. She recalls having to keep her arms raised so the bracelets wouldn't fall onto the floor. It's not much of a stretch to know that Manya makes jewelry now, as she has since her junior high years. Her first entrepreneurial experience was when she donned a bracelet with plastic letters that spelled out her name. All her friends wanted one, too! And they got one, for $1!

These days, Manya creates circles out of pure silver wire, then fuses the ends together. With four different hammer tips, she adds texture to the wire with the goal of making it shimmer like sunlight on water. Manya will demonstrate her technique during the Third Thursday Art Walk. Watch her make the circles and fuse the ends together. Try your hand at adding texture to some rings. Perhaps even make your own pair of earrings! $25 Art Walk night only.

Vie & Vin // BethAnn Lawson

172 Sunset Ave, open Wednesday - Friday 2-8pm, Saturday 12-8pm, Sunday 12-6pm (21+ only)
SEE ART ALL MONTH DURING BUSINESS HOURS AND ART WALK ON JANUARY 16TH 5-8PM

BethAnn Lawson is a modern-impressionist painter who lives and works in Seattle, Washington. Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, she was taught by and is heavily influenced by her surrealist painter-father, who was a founding member of the San Francisco Street Artist Association. After graduating from the Institute of Design in San Francisco, she moved to Seattle and spent over three decades as a textile designer, graphic designer and illustrator, but returned to her love of painting after the passing of her father in 2011.

BethAnn's art embraces modern compositions—cityscapes, people, and landscapes. She uses the color black strategically to anchor the compositions, creating bold contrasts that deliver a contemporary edge, combining a sense of modernity, perspective and depth.

Up close, the paintings offer a slightly abstract view, drawing viewers in with intricate details that unravel and come into focus as they step back from the work. BethAnn often hides secret shapes and messages within, but also deliberately leaves spaces for the viewer's imagination to weave in their own narratives. Her show at Vie & Vin includes a few botanicals, harkening back to warmer days when the vineyards back home (Napa, California) were in bloom.
